College of Education Associate Professor Serves as President-Elect for the UH Faculty Senate

Catherine HornDepartment of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies (DELPS) associate professor, Catherine Horn, has been selected president-elect for the University of Houston (UH) Faculty Senate.  Horn will serve as president-elect from January 2016 to December 2016 and will then serve as Faculty Senate president from January 2017 to December 2017.

As Faculty Senate president-elect, Horn will be working to support the president (Jonathan Snow, professor Earth & Atmospheric Sciences) as he leads the faculty through several important initiatives including, for example, the implementation of the state-mandated campus carry law.

The Faculty Senate is a hub of opportunity for important work to connect and flourish. It is also an organization that carefully attends to the conditions the campus provides for the full academic community (faculty, students, and staff) to thrive.  Members of the Faculty Senate ask critical questions, answer them carefully, and then do something meaningful with those answers.

“It is a humbling privilege to represent my colleagues at the University of Houston,” said Horn. “Our faculty includes some of the finest scholars and educators in the world, and the work they are doing in their classrooms and through their research is resulting in positive change. I count it a gift to reflect their strengths, contributions, and needs in important discussions of the ways in which UH can continue to grow in its capacity to join our community partners in achieving the collective impact we seek.”

“Dr. Horn continues to lead not only at the departmental and college level, but makes significant contributions at the university level,” said Robert McPherson, Dean of the UH College of Education.  “I am proud of her work to further the university mission through the Faculty Senate.  Her experience and leadership will serve the Faculty Senate well.”

Shared governance is the collective commitment of the faculty and administration at the University of Houston to work cooperatively, together with other university constituencies, to achieve a common vision of excellence for the university (Faculty Senate Constitution).

Horn is executive program coordinator for the PhD in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies (HELPS) at the College of Education (COE), Director for the Institute for Educational Policy Research and Evaluation (IEPRE), and Director for the Center for Research, Evaluation and Advancement of Teacher Education (CREATE).  Her research interests include: systemic barriers to college access for traditionally underrepresented students; K-12 high stakes testing; college admission policy; research use; and quantitative research methods.
