First-Generation Students Thrive at UH Empowerment Event

By Dhivyadharshini Selvaraj

The University of Houston’s Center for Student Empowerment recently hosted an inspiring event designed to equip first-generation students with the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive. The event brought together students, staff, and key campus partners for a day of connection, learning, and empowerment.

Representatives from Counseling and Psychological Services, Advancement and Alumni, University Career Services, UH Wellness, Justin Dart, Jr. Student Accessibility Center, Student Housing and Residential Life, and Veteran Services were on hand to share insights, answer questions, and provide direct access to critical resources. Students actively engage with each session, asking thoughtful questions about career opportunities, scholarships, internships, mental health, and counseling services, showing a strong commitment to both their personal and professional growth.

The event’s atmosphere was vibrant, welcoming, and energizing. Students felt comfortable exploring, engaging, and building relationships—not only with staff but also with one another. Many attendees expressed excitement about the opportunity to learn, network, and connect in a space that celebrates their first-generation journey.

Staff members functioned as intentional bridge-builders, guiding students through available resources while fostering meaningful conversations and support networks. Throughout the event, a sense of community and belonging was palpable as students encouraged and inspired one another.

First Gen Committee Co-Chairs Kathleen Guzman and Gabe Jackson shared:

“This event was designed to serve as a roadmap for first-generation students—equipping them with the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed.”

The day concluded with a shared sense of accomplishment and inspiration, leaving students energized and motivated to pursue their goals. The Center for Student Empowerment and the Division of Student Affairs reaffirmed their commitment to providing holistic support, connection, and access for first-generation students.

And momentum continues! Similar events are planned for the Fall, offering more opportunities for students to engage with campus resources, connect with mentors, and strengthen the first-generation community at the University of Houston.
