Exploring Houston, Building Community: A Day with International Coogs

By Dhivyadharshini Selvaraj

On Saturday, February 7, ten adventurous Coogs set out on an unforgettable journey [ST1] with the International Student & Scholar Services Office through Houston as part of “Houston, We Have a Tour.” Designed especially for international students, the program encouraged participants to step beyond the campus bubble, explore the city, and discover Houston in a whole new way — all while building confidence, making connections, and embracing adventure.

The day began with the group tackling Houston’s METRO system, a rite of passage for anyone hoping to navigate the city like a local. With curiosity, courage, and plenty of Cougar spirit, the students hopped on buses and light rails, figuring out routes and schedules, and discovering firsthand how accessible Houston truly is. Every turn and transfer became part of the adventure, sparking excitement and a sense of independence that made the city feel a little smaller and a lot more welcoming.

The journey continued with a relaxing walk through Hermann Park, one of Houston’s most iconic green spaces. Between the scenic views, playful conversations, and spontaneous moments of discovery, the park became more than just a beautiful backdrop — it became a place to connect, unwind, and notice the little surprises around every corner. Students learned, for instance, that Houston’s bayous are home to a fascinating variety of turtles, a hidden gem that turned a simple stroll into an eye-opening encounter with local wildlife.

No Houston adventure would be complete without a visit to the Houston Zoo. While Shasta and Louie might have remained elusive, the group still delighted in watching animals from all corners of the globe, laughing together, sharing stories, and soaking up the vibrant energy of the zoo. Every moment felt like a shared adventure, and the experience left everyone with memories they will cherish for years to come.

Beyond sightseeing, the program achieved something even greater: it fostered cultural exploration, strengthened community, and empowered students to step confidently into new surroundings. Every ride, walk, and encounter transformed Houston into a living classroom, proving that learning isn’t confined to four walls — it happens everywhere, especially when curiosity and friendship guide the way.

Mission accomplished, Coogs.
