On November 11, as a nation, we solemnly honor the courageous men and women who have selflessly served our country; individuals whose leadership, dedication, and resilience continue to inspire and uplift us all. This Veterans Day, the University of Houston transformed appreciation into purposeful action by celebrating service and fostering tangible pathways to success for those transitioning from military to civilian careers.
On November 6, 2025, UH proudly hosted the Veteran Talent Career Connection: Shaping
Houston’s Workforce at the UH Hilton. This complimentary community event, expertly
organized by University Career Services, Veteran Services, and the Justin Dart, Jr.
Student Accessibility Center brought together veteran students, employers, and community
leaders in a collaborative effort to explore career opportunities, exchange valuable
insights, and highlight meaningful employment avenues to strengthen Houston’s workforce.
The program commenced with a stirring Presentation of Colors performed by the Texas
City High School Marine Corps JROTC, followed by a warmth welcome from Dr. Celina
Dugas, a veteran and Director of UH Veteran Services. After a brief ceremony honoring
veterans, attendees engaged in a dynamic career and networking fair, fostering direct
connections between veteran talent, employers, and community partners.
In partnership with NextOp and the City of Houston Office of Veterans and Military Affairs, the event featured an engaging employer panel discussion moderated by UH alum and ABC13 News anchor Brittaney Wilmore. Additional highlights included a practical Resume 101 workshop, professional headshot sessions, and dedicated networking time; all designed to equip veterans with the tools and connections necessary for career advancement. Employers and veteran-focused organizations provide tailored guidance, hiring pathways, and comprehensive support services to facilitate veterans’ successful transitions into civilian roles.
Dr. Monica Thompson, executive director of University Career Services, reflected, “Bringing this event to life was truly inspiring. Through strategic collaboration across Student Affairs, NextOp, and the City’s Office of Veterans and Military Affairs, we created an impactful platform connecting veterans to critical resources and employers. This event offered invaluable opportunities for every attendee.”
The Veteran Talent Career Connection exemplifies UH’s steadfast commitment to student success, and workforce development. By centering veterans within campus career initiatives, the Division of Student Affairs exemplifies how gratitude can be transformed into meaningful action, providing ongoing, practical support to empower our veteran community every day.
