HOUSTON (July 1, 2025) — The University of Houston’s Division of Student Affairs (DSA) captured a Bronze Excalibur Award from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Houston Chapter, earning top honors in the Tactical — Annual Report category for its 2024 Annual Report.Germaine Washington Excalibur Awards

The competition was formidable: Consolidated Asset Management Services took Gold, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo claimed Silver. “Standing on the same stage as two Houston powerhouses underscores the quality of our storytelling and the impact of student‐centered work happening every day at UH,” said Germaine Washington, director of marketing and communications and lead architect of the award-winning report.

Collaborative effort, student focused

Developed by Washington in partnership with Dr. Scott Radimer, director of assessment and planning, the visually rich, data-driven publication chronicles a year of expanded student services, engagement, and innovative wellness initiatives. Infographics and interactive digital elements helped judges recognize the report for both creativity and measurable outcomes that convey clear information .

Spotlight on “The Revival of Public Relations Excellence”

PRSA Houston’s annual gala, themed “The Revival of Public Relations Excellence,” unfolded inside The Majestic Metro, a meticulously restored 1920s movie palace  . Guests embraced the setting in feathered headpieces, pin-striped suits, and beaded gowns, creating a roaring ’20s tableau beneath the theatre’s gilt ceilings and marquee lights. Broadcast journalist Melanie Camp emceed the evening, weaving stories of Houston’s communications successes with her authenticity and humor.

UH Division of Student Affairs presence felt

The Division of Student Affairs served as a table sponsor and filled with colleagues, family, and friends:

  • Gabe Jackson, Assistant to the Vice President with guest Erikka Knowles
  • Vi Tran, Program Manager of Assessment and Planning, accompanied by her husband, Arief Stark.
  • Alicia Whitmire, Administrative Assistant, VPSA Office, with her husband, Joshua Puey.
  • Germaine Washington, Director of Marketing and Communications, with guest Anthony Muhammad
  • Monica Thompson, Executive Director, University Career Services

 

“It’s important to take time to celebrate your achievements when you can,” Radimer said. “That’s why it was wonderful to be able to attend the Excalibur Awards with the entire team, and to know our hard work was recognized by the PRSA as among the best in Houston.”

Looking ahead

The Bronze Excalibur adds to a growing list of regional and national accolades for the Division of Student Affairs. Washington said the team is already planning the 2025 Annual Report, aiming to deepen interactive storytelling while continuing to spotlight the university’s commitment to student success, engagement, and well-being.

“As UH moves toward its centennial in 2027, the Division of Student Affairs will keep raising the bar for transparent reporting and compelling narratives that champion Cougar life,” Washington added.
