    Please join the University of Houston Department of History and the for lecture presented by Dr. Louis A. Pérez, Jr., director of the Institute for the Study of the Americas at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Pérez's principal research interests center on the nineteenth and twentieth-century Caribbean, with a research emphasis on Cuba. Pérez is author of numerous books on Cuban history and culture, including On Becoming Cuban: Iden-tity, Nationality, and Culture and The Structure of Cuban History: Meanings and Purpose of the Past. The books will be introduced by Richard H. Armstrong who has a dual appointment as associate professor of Classical Studies in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and in the Honors College and Texas A&M’s Classics and Italian Professor Federica Ciccolella. A Q&A session with the authors will follow and refreshments will be served.     The University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) is pleased to announce that Adaptive Athletics at UH will host the Cougar Cup Best of the Rest Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. This six-team consolation tournament is sanctioned by the United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) and features three teams from the state of Texas. Elite squads that fell just short of qualification for the 2019 Wheelchair Rugby National Championships will battle it out at the University of Houston Recreation Center. Learn More

This year’s theme is “Media for Social Justice: Journalism, Activism and Technology.” The summit will bring together journalists, activists, scholars, and students from Latin America and the United States to explore the media-social movement relationship and ways journalists and activists can collaborate to take a stand and denounce injustice.

    In celebration of Black History Month, please join the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Department of History and Dr. David McNally, Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business for a talk titled Slavery by Another Name. The discussion will examine the discovery of the remains of 95 black inmates at the Imperial Farm Prison in Sugar Land, which has drawn national attention to the history of convict leasing in Texas and the Greater Houston Area. The distinguished speakers will explain this history and the current struggle to honor and memorialize the lives and deaths of these 95 men. Read more
