Alumni, Students Earn Honors at TSHP 2013

Research, Clinical Skills and Service Activities Recognized at Annual Conference April 23-27 in Austin

 

Houston 05-01-13 - UH College of Pharmacy alumni and students earned an array of awards at the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists 2013 Annual Seminar April 23-27 in Austin.

Sarah Lake-Wallace, M.S., Pharm.D. ('00), was among the inaugural TSHP Fellows recognized at the TSHP 2013 Annual Seminar.

Alumna Sarah Lake-Wallace, M.S., Pharm.D. ('00), clinical effectiveness director at Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and president of the TSHP Research & Education Foundation, was recognized as a member of the inaugural class of TSHP Fellows. The new Practitioner Recognition Program honors TSHP members who have made significant and sustained contributions to the Society and the profession. The program is intended to recognize excellence in health-system pharmacy practice and promote public awareness of pharmacists who have distinguished themselves in practice.     

Alumna Kady Phe, Pharm.D. ('12), and Samuel Akinyele, both PGY1 pharmacy practice residents at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, won the Resident category of the Clinical Skills Competition.

Jacinto Villarreal, M.S., Pharm.D. ('01), receives the Research Poster Award (Practitioner/Administrative category) from TSHP Research & Education Foundation's Sarah Lake-Wallace and Steven Pass.

Alumnus Jacinto Villarreal, M.S., Pharm.D. ('01), residency program director and clinical coordinator at Christus Santa Rosa Healthcare Children's Hospital of San Antonio, picked up his second consecutive award in the Practitioner/Administrative category of the Research Poster Competition. Villarreal's project was entitled, "The Birth of an Innovative Obstetrics APPE Experience."

The UH Chapter of the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists also brought home several awards from TSHP Student Section Executive Committee. The UH SSHP Chapter received the Service Excellence Award for Residency Education and Advocacy Awareness Innovation Award. In addition, SSHP member Morgan Payne received a Special Recognition Award for her video documentary promoting student attendance at the annual seminar. 

In addition, the following students received
2012-13 TSHP Research & Education Foundation scholarships:

  • Zachary Kirk – Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists Leadership Scholarship
  • Melanie E. Laine – James T. Doluisio Scholarship
  • Amy Lehnert – Glenda Lawson McRee Scholarship
  • Tara Molina – Celso and Matiana M. Cuellar Sr. Scholarship

In other UHCOP-related news from TSHP, Linda Haines, Pharm.D., M.S. ('11), was installed as TSHP Treasurer. Haines is an informatics administrative specialist at The Methodist Hospital in Houston and a member of the inaugural M.S./PGY1-PGY2 Residency program between the college and six Texas Medical Center health systems. 

The TSHP 2014 Annual Seminar will be April 11-13 at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston.
