Refunds
Refunds of unused monies associated with tuition, fees, and financial aid may be deposited into a Higher One Account that is associated with your Cougar Refund Card. You can change the settings in your Higher One Account so that refunds are directly deposited to another bank account of your choice. Once a refund is deposited to a Higher One Account or any other bank account, the University of Houston and its affiliated offices cannot remove or move your money in any way since it is a bank account controlled by you. If you need help with your Higher One Account or Cougar Refund Card, call the toll free phone number on the back of your Cougar Refund Card.
Refund Policy
Note: Administrative offices are not open on weekends. If the percentage of refund due to a withdrawal changes over a weekend, the student must submit his/her withdrawal to the Office of Registration and Academic Records University of Houston, Houston, TX 77204-2161 by 5 p.m. the Friday before that weekend in order to obtain the higher percentage of refund.
The effective date recorded for drops or withdrawals will be the date the student drops the course(s) through the Web or the date the drop form or written request is received by the Office of Registration and Academic Records.
Note: If a credit balance is the result of dropped or withdrawn courses, or due to an overpayment, or due to credit(s) issued on an account, and no financial aid has been received, then a refund will be issued only by requesting that such refund be generated.
If a credit balance is the result of the application of excess financial aid to an account, and eligibility for financial aid is maintained with the existing class load, then a refund will automatically be generated and sent via electronic fund transfer once you have selected a refund preference with your Cougar Refund Card.
Higher One Student Refund Process and Cougar Refund Card
Go Green...See Green...Faster!
UH is making it quicker and easier for students to receive their refunds!
Effective January 1, 2010, the University of Houston and Higher One will be "Going Green” with the student refund process. This move will not only help us conserve the environment, but will also enable UH students to receive their refunds faster and easier.
- So what does this mean for students?
- The university and Higher One are asking all students to login to Higher One and make a "Green" refund choice of either ACH (funds transferred to bank account of choice) or direct deposit into a Higher One Account. If you have already selected ACH or direct deposit to a Higher One Account as your refund preference, we thank you for "Going Green"! In order for students to select a refund preference, they must have an "activated" Higher One Card.
- Students who have an "activated" Higher One Refund Card, but have not selected ACH or direct deposit to a Higher One Account as their refund preference will need to login to Higher One and make a "Green" refund choice.
- Students who do not have an "activated" Higher One Refund Card will need to perform the following actions:
- Login to myUH
- Click on "Student Financials" link located on the left-hand side.
- Click on "Self Service Refund Request"
- Click on "Need a new Higher One Refund Card?" link.
- Read the information listed in the "Student Refund Higher One Card Explanation" section carefully and identify the necessary course of action.
Withdrawals
NOTE - Definition of Withdrawal: Dropping ALL enrolled courses in a single term.
For example: A student who enrolls in a Six Wk 1 course and a Six Wk 2 course is enrolled for ONE Summer Term.
Important Notice: Refund policy is determined by Texas Statute, not by the university. Your refund will be based on the amount of tuition and fees charged. It is not based on the amount you have actually paid.
For example: You have enrolled for classes with a total tuition and fee charges of $1000.00 for the semester. You withdraw during the 50% refund period. The university is owed $500.00 at this point in time.
a) If you had paid $500.00 at this time, you would receive no refund.
b) If you had only paid $300.00 at this time, you would still owe the university $200.00.
c) If you had paid $700.00 at this time, then $200.00 would be refunded to you.
Students who withdraw from all courses at the university prior to the first day of classes will be charged a $15 matriculation fee.

NOTE: Students who drop one or more courses but maintain enrollment for that academic term (i.e., do not drop all of their courses) may be given a refund for the dropped course(s) according to the schedule below.
For example: A student enrolls in 15 hours at the start of the spring semester. The student later DROPS one three hour course. The student has NOT "Withdrawn" from all courses in a single term. The student has merely dropped three hours while maintaining enrollment in 12 hours.
