Before applying, please review the Transfer Admissions Requirements. You will find information about how the University of Houston makes transfer admission decisions. Many UH majors and programs have requirements that go above and beyond the UH general admission requirements. These additional requirements are under the heading "Impacted Major Requirements."

General Transfer Admission Requirements

Students who submit a complete transfer application file (including the application, application fee, official college transcript(s) and any applicable admission items) to the University of Houston by the transfer admission deadline will be reviewed for admission. Note: Official transcripts must be received from all previously attended institutions.

Transfer applicants are reviewed for admission for a first, second or third choice major selected on the ApplyTexas Application.

The following sliding scale is used for general transfer admission to the University of Houston:

*All grades from college-level courses, including repeated courses, are used in computing the cumulative grade point average (GPA). All colleges attended must be U.S. regionally accredited.

Impacted Major Requirements: Transfer applicants are admitted to a specific major. Several UH majors require selective admission criteria in addition to general transfer admission. For information, go to Impacted Major Requirements.

General admission to the University of Houston will be granted to applicants who have earned an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from the last school attended, as long as the school is U.S. regionally accredited. Note: Impacted Major Requirements apply to applicants with Associate of Science and Associate of Art degrees.

Applicants who are not eligible to return immediately to the last institution attended will not be admitted.

If a student wishes to defer enrollment to a future term, he/she must reapply by submitting a new application, application fee and any updated admissions documents.

Recalculation Process: Transfer applicants applying for the spring semester may be eligible for a grade recalculation. Grade recalculations are for transfer applicants who believe the addition of fall coursework may change the outcome of their admissions decision. International applicants will not be considered for the Recalculation process.

Summer 2017: Students must complete the Recalculation Form and submit updated transcripts reflecting summer grades by May 15, 2017.

Fall 2017: Students must complete the Recalculation Form and submit updated transcripts reflecting fall grades by July 14, 2017.

Architecture Majors

Application priority deadline is February 1. Admission is granted for the fall semester only. Applicants are encouraged to submit an 8.5"x11" portfolio clearly marked with the student's name, contact information and myUH ID. Portfolios will only be returned to applicants who include stamped envelopes with the appropriate postage. Architecture transfer students with no previous architecture courses must meet general Transfer admissions requirements and follow the same additional process as freshmen students.

Enrollment in studio courses is restricted to students admitted to the college. Applicants must first meet general University admission requirements (listed in this catalog) in order to be considered by the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design.

Placement level in design studios is based on an evaluation of transcripts and portfolios. Applicants must submit a portfolio of academic design work, which should contain examples of class work accomplished for credit and must be presented in an 8.5 x 11 inch format and contained in a binder, clearly marked with the applicant’s name and contact information. Do not send original work, only reproductions. The portfolio should be received well in advance of the semester applied for to allow time for evaluation. Applicants not submitting portfolios will not be given advanced placement, and if accepted, must begin with the Freshman Design Studio I, ARCH 1500.

Arts Majors
Music Majors must have a 2.50 GPA in all music courses earned and must audition for the Moores School of Music faculty on their primary instrument or voice prior to admission. See more information about auditions.

Theatre/Dance Majors must audition.

Business Majors

Transfer applicants who have earned fewer than 30 semester hours of college credit must meet the Bauer College of Business requirements for freshman admission.

Applicants with more than 60 semester hours must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average on the last 60 hours of college-level coursework, including any attempted transfer courses. If the 60th semester hour occurs in the middle of a semester, all grades for that semester are included in the calculation.

Applicants who have attempted coursework at the University of Houston also must have at least a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average at the University of Houston.

Education Majors
  • Pre-Health Majors must have a 2.3 GPA
  • Pre-Teaching and Learning Majors must have a 2.5 GPA
Engineering Majors
To be considered for admission, students must meet the GPA requirements shown in the table below and have completed at least:
  1. One non-remedial college level English course;

  2. MATH 1431 — Calculus I  and MATH 1432 — Calculus II;

  3. CHEM 1331 — Fundamentals of Chemistry; and

  4. PHYS 1321 — University Physics I.

* To be admitted, students must have credit for (can include AP credit):

  • Calculus I
  • Calculus II
  • General Chemistry I
  • "Calculus-based" Physics I

Students must also have attempted (no AP credit) at least one non-remedial college-level English course, at least one Calculas course and at least one college-level Science course* required by any engineering major. In the calculation of each GPA all attempts taken at any institution count, even if a course was repeated.

**Biology 1361/1161 and 1362/1162, Chemistry 1331/111, 1332/1112, 1372/1117, 321, 3331, and 3332, Geology 1330/1130, Physics 1321/1121 and 1322/1122.

Hotel & Restaurant Management Majors

Applicants who completed fewer than 15 semester hours of college credit must meet the requirements for freshman admission.

Applicants who completed 15 or more semester hours of college credit must have a 2.85 or higher cumulative GPA.

Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Majors
  • Communications Majors
    • Communication Majors who have completed 15-60 semester hours need a 2.25 or higher cumulative GPA; applicants with more than 60 semester hours must have a 2.25 cumulative GPA on the last 60 hours.
  • Communication Sciences & Disorders applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.67.
  • Economics Majors must have a 2.25 or higher cumulative GPA.
  • Human Nutrition and Foods Majors 
    • Applicants who have completed 15-29 hours of coursework must have a 2.50 GPA.
    • Applicants who have completed 30 semester hours or more must have a 2.30 GPA or higher.
  • Kinesiology Majors 
    • Applicants who have completed 15-29 hours of coursework must have a 2.50 GPA.
    • Applicants who have completed 30 semester hours or more must have a 2.30 GPA or higher.
Natural Sciences and Mathematics Majors

Applicants with 15 or more hours must meet the following conditions for approval into NSM:

  • 2.50 GPA or greater in ALL college-level work attempted.
  • 2.50 GPA or greater in ALL college-level biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics and physics courses attempted.
  • 2.50 GPA or greater in ALL courses from either CATEGORY I or CATEGORY II attempted.

(biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geology, geophysics, earth science, environmental science, mathematical biology and physics majors)

  • Must have successfully completed at least one of the following college-level math courses.
