    UH Trains Future Agri-Scientists to Outsmart Climate Change Threats to Food Crops

    Researchers at the University of Houston are training future agricultural scientists in new methods of protecting the world’s food crops – which too often are left vulnerable to extreme weather events in these days of climate change. Funded by a $995,805 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the team is expanding research knowledge and building a new curriculum for students, many from communities currently underrepresented among the agriculture industry’s leadership.

    UH Population Health Collaborative: Driving Discovery to Advance Quality of Life

    A new University of Houston Population Health initiative uses a multi-sector approach to evaluate and address the most pressing issues impacting quality of life. The UH Population Health Collaborative uses innovative research and analytics to create accessible training and educational resources to fuel positive community quality of life outcomes.

    Research Advances Toward Goal of Net Zero Carbon Emissions

    Scientists may be on the verge of taking a big step closer to the net-zero carbon emissions goal, thanks to University of Houston research into algae. Hidden potential is being revealed in the major algae studies at the microbial products lab, located at UH at Sugar Land. The research project is detailed in a newly published article in Green Chemistry, a journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

    Innovative New Course Brings Nursing Students into Patients’ Homes

    The University of Houston Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing partnered with Humana’s CenterWell Home Health to offer an innovative and forward-thinking elective to its nursing students. The Preventative and Restorative Nursing Care elective introduces undergraduate students to the concept, challenges, and benefits of home health nursing.

    The Heart of UH: UHPD Sergeant Demonstrates Cougar Spirit

    On a hot day in late summer in a parking lot at the University of Houston at Sugar Land, a simple act would prove that the Cougar spirit is alive and well, and that Coogs truly care. Tammy Cleary, a proud 1986 graduate of the C. T. Bauer College of Business and the mother of a Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership graduate, had a mission: Find the perfect gift for her son's baby shower. The gift? A UH onesie, symbolizing the family's deep-rooted connection to Houston and UH.

    Officials Break Ground on New Technology Building at UH at Sugar Land Instructional Site

    The University of Houston celebrated the groundbreaking of a new $65 million academic building in ceremonies at the UH at Sugar Land instructional site. Before faculty, staff, students and community leaders, UH officials turned the dirt for what will become the Technology Building-Sugar Land Academic Building 2 (SAB2).

An Evening With Booker T. Jones

Booker T. Jones is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and arguably the most famous Hammond B3 player in history. As leader of the legendary Booker T and the MGs, this pillar of soul music collaborated with Otis Redding, Albert King, and more during his tenure at Stax Records. Since then, Booker has lent his trademark keyboard chops to and produced classic albums such as Willie Nelson’s multi-platinum hit “Stardust” and Bill Withers’ “Just As I Am” featuring the hit song “Ain’t No Sunshine”.

Exhibition Opening Reception - "Berlin: A Jewish Ode to the Metropolis"

This exhibit, features work by artist Jason Langer from his series Berlin: A Jewish Ode to the Metropolis. This project is deeply personal to photographer Jason Langer and are the product of a five-year reconciliation of the impressions of the Holocaust that were seeded in Langer as a 10-year-old living on a kibbutz in Israel. Over the five-year process Langer was able to undo the fearful impressions about Germany implanted in his mind as a child. He was able to see that Berlin is a city of dichotomies and that there are symbols of division and reunification everywhere.

This French holiday commemorates the Storming of the Bastille in 1789 as well as the Festival of the Federation in 1790 during the French Revolution. It is also observed in many countries around the world as the French Revolution led to the end of feudalism in Europe and advances in individual freedoms.

Family Program: Kathak Flamenco- A Celebration of Cultures
  • Time: 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Kathak, which originated in Northwest India, is based on the art of storytelling. Through song, dance, musical, and percussive accompaniment it depicts stories central to Indian culture. Flamenco, which originated in the South of Spain (Andalucía), is the conversation between song, guitar, dance, and percussion. The folklore of India, located in the Asian continent, generated musical traditions that were exported by transient people to the countries of Europe and the Middle East. Traits in the language, vocal styles, and rhythmic patterns in Andalucía, Spain can be traced to the Punjab region in India. Kathak Flamenco - A Celebration of Cultures highlights and showcases the commonalities and differences between these two art forms as a joyous celebration from Houston-based artists!

Registration required. Participants can register for the program online one week prior to the program date. This program is made possible thanks to the Friends of the First Colony Branch Library.

IgboFest Houston hosted by Ndi Ichie Cultural Club has reigned for over 15 years in the city of Houston bringing in performers from across the United States from Chicago to New Orleans including Nigeria. Join us to celebrate and learn about a West African culture on Saturday, July 22nd, 2023! We are excited as this year's performance is the 20th Edition. It will consist of professional dancers of Nigerian and Non-Nigerian descent that has embraced the Igbo culture to display an array of cultural dances and folklore with an educational twist.
