Like many of you, I have also wondered, “Why do I have to pay for parking?” Shortly after I started working with UH Parking and Transportation Services, I got my answer: “the garages and lots don’t pay for themselves.”

As you may know, Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) receives no funding from UH or the state. PTS falls under the university’s auxiliary umbrella meaning the department is self-funded. From the Cougar Ride after-hours shuttle service to the PGS lights in the garages that indicate which parking spots are available to elevator and concrete repairs, the department pays for it out of the revenue they receive from permit sales, visitor/special events parking and enforcement. With that being said all students, faculty and staff pay full price for parking.

For the 2022 fiscal year, the total revenue received was 57% student permits, 20% visitor/special events, 17% staff permits and 5% enforcement.

The projected revenue for the 2023 fiscal year is expected to come from 56% student permits, 24% visitor/special events, 15% staff permits and 5% enforcement.

We have a duty to uphold the PTS mission. We will continue to provide safe and proximal parking to all UH.
