Prof. Ting, a fellow of Americam Physical Society/Condensed Matter Physics, has been actively working on condensed matter theories related to semiconductors, magnetism, superconductivity, and strongly correlated electron systems. He and his group has employed numerous theoretical methods, such as the diagrammatic many body theory, path integral approach, and numerical techniques including Monte-Carlo simulation, exact diagonalization and transfer-matrix method, to investigate various problems in solid state systems. He has more than 300 publications and his recent works are involving a) the study of local physics in cuprate-superconductors (HTS) and Fe based superconductors which directly relates to the STM experiments, b) the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order in Fe-pnictide compounds, c) the signatures of the FFLO state in heavy fermion superconductors and in cold atom systems or optical lattices, d) the study of many body effects and transport properties of Dirac fermions in graphene and electrons in bilayer graphene, and e) the physics due to spin-orbit interactions.

It covers electron motion in a periodic lattice, quantization of lattice waves and phonons, neutron scatterings, band structures, semiconductors, interacting electrons and plasmons, transport theory, optical properties, electrons in a strong megnetic field and Landau levels, magnetism, and superconductivity. The lecture will follow the text book: Principles of the theory of Solids by J. M. Ziman (Second Edition, Cambridge Press)and the lecture notes of Prof. P. Misra who is a visiting professor in the Physics Department, and Prof. Ting.

2. Physics 7315 (Fall, 2009) Quantum Many Body Physics; this is one semester graduate course. Prerequisites are quantum mechanics and statistical physics. The lecture is designed for graduate students in condensed matter physics, and will be based on Prof. Ting\'s lecture notes. It covers second quantization, electron and phonon Green\'s functions at zero and finite temperatures, Feynman diagrams in the presence of electron-electron interactions and electron-phonon interactions, properties of electron gas in the random phase approximation, transport theory due to impurity and phonon scatterings, weak localizations, and superconductivity.
