Dr. Anthony Timmins’ research interests mainly focus on the ALICE detector at the CERN laboratory, Geneva, Switzerland. The ALICE detector measures data from relativistic heavy-ions collisions, where a state of matter called the Quark Gluon Plasma is created. In this state, the quarks and gluons that make up nuclear matter “melt” to become deconfined. The temperatures required for this transition are approximately 4 trillion kelvin, which is approximately a million times hotter than the center of the Sun. It is believed the universe existed in such a state shortly after the big bang.
