Performance Development Plan

The University of Houston recognizes that the quality of university services depends upon its employees. Performance Development Plans (PDP) can help play a crucial role in enhancing organizational efficiency and employee productivity. There may be two instances where you might be required to utilize a PDP:

PDP For ePerformance Rating

Occasionally, during the appraisal process, an employee may fall below the expected threshold for performance. Regular staff employees who receive a needs improvement rating, must be placed on a Performance Development Plan which, at the minimum, will include all of the following components:

  1. Clear identification of the problem(s) to be corrected or the standards to be met
  2. Identification of the remedial action and expected time frame for improvement
  3. Statement of the results of failure to take the specified remedial action

Performance Development Plans for ePerformance ratings must be submitted to Human Resources and will be kept on file.

Performance Development plans should be designed for at least 30 days but no more than 90 days.  Failure to successfully complete a Performance Development Plan may result in progressive discipline.

PDP for On-going Performance Management

When performance gaps are identified, it may be useful to use a Performance Development Plan as a tool to ensure an employee’s performance meets the expectations of the department. They can help to re-align the goals of the department with employee’s performance and may help establish areas for additional training if needed. Performance Development Plans utilizes an action plan to help establish areas for development while holding employees accountable for their performance.

Performance Development Plans contribute to organizational success by promoting transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in individual and team performance.
