Benefits Eligibility

  • Who is eligible for benefits?
    • Faculty and staff who work 20 hours or more per week for an anticipated period of 4.5 months or longer are eligible for health benefits at the part-time rate, as well as optional benefits and retirement plan options.
    • Faculty and staff who work 30 hours or more per week for an anticipated period of 4.5 months or longer are eligible for health benefits at the full-time rate, as well as optional benefits and retirement plan options.
    • Some graduate student workers are eligible for employee insurance at the part time rate. They do not qualify for retirement, though.
  • What about the Affordable Care Act?
    • A part-time employee who would not normally qualify for insurance benefits may qualify under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if they worked an average of 30 or more hours per week during the last year, counting from June 3 through June 2. If you are eligible, you will be notified.
    • You will not be eligible for retirement benefits, unless 1) you are simultaneously contributing to TRS or ORP via another employer, or 2) you were contributing to TRS or ORP during the first month of the fiscal year.
    • ACA benefits continue until the end of the fiscal year or separation from the university, whichever comes first.
