Houston Early Research Experience (HERE)

The Houston Early Research Experience (HERE) is a two-week workshop designed to introduce first- and second-year undergraduates to the basics of conducting research. Guided by UH faculty mentors, students will explore academic topics, expand their professional networks, and learn how to ask the right research questions.
 
Target audience
First and second-year undergraduate students, all majors
 
Cohort size
48 students led by eight faculty mentors

$1,000 per student
$2,500 stipend per mentor

Houston Scholars

The Houston Scholars is a competitive program for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores to receive mentorship and scholarship funding to pursue research, internships, and other distinctive experiential learning opportunities.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at the University of Houston provides funding for UH undergraduates to participate in a focused, full-time, 10-week research experience under the direction of UH faculty.

Provost’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship (PURS)

The Provost's Undergraduate Research Scholarship (PURS) program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in a semester-long research project under the direction of a UH faculty mentor.

Research for Aspiring Coogs in the Humanities (REACH)

The Research for Aspiring Coogs in the Humanities (REACH) program provides a year-long introductory research experience for students in the humanities disciplines by connecting participants to existing undergraduate research projects at the University of Houston.

Target audience
Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students pursuing a humanities major
 
Cohort size
Varies depending on projects available for year, recently 17 students in AY25

Mellon Research Scholars

The Mellon Research Scholars program at the University of Houston supports a cohort of students who are highly motivated to conduct research and attend graduate school in the humanities. Funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, the program aims to train future scholars in the humanities.

Juniors pursuing a humanities major

Energy Scholars

The Energy Scholars program at the University of Houston provides undergraduate students the opportunity to work on a year-long, energy-related research project under the direction of a UH faculty mentor.

Undergraduate students of all majors with an interest in working on an energy-related research project

Undergraduate Research Day (URD)

Undergraduate Research Day is hosted each spring by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Major Awards in collaboration with the Honors College and the MD Anderson Library. This event brings together hundreds of visitors to celebrate the work of undergraduate researchers across all UH disciplines who showcase their work in poster presentations.

Target audience

Any currently enrolled University of Houston undergraduate student who conducted a mentored research project over the past year is eligible to submit a poster for Undergraduate Research Day.

This event features the work of UH undergraduate researchers who participated in independent research and faculty-mentored projects over the past year.
