Director, Speech & Debate
Richard A. Garner is the director of speech and debate and an instructional assistant professor in the Honors College. Before coming to the University of Houston, he coached at Harvard for a decade after stints at N.Y.U., Columbia, and Emory. He received his doctorate from the University at Buffalo for work on the literature and rhetoric of early America, focusing on the politics and literature of slavery, sentimental fiction, and aesthetics.
