Family caregivers are often the backbone of cancer care—yet their emotional, cognitive, and social burdens are rarely measured.
A collaborative research partnership between the University of Houston and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in India has reached an important milestone with the successful completion of a cross-institutional study examining the experiences of family caregivers of cancer patients in India.
Led by Dr. Samina Salim (University of Houston College of Pharmacy) and Prof. Mohammad Akram (Dept. Of Radiotherapy, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU), the study explored the caregiving burden, quality of life, and cognitive vulnerability of cancer patients and their family caregivers. The psychological, social, and cognitive impact of 100 family caregivers was the focus of joint research.
Supported by the Global Faculty Development Award (GFDF) from the University of Houston's Institute for Global Engagement, this collaboration reflects the impact of international research partnerships in advancing cancer care, mental health, and global health. The project also highlights the growing academic relationship between the two institutions following the Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2025.
The Global Faculty Development Fund, sponsored by the Office of the Provost, is given to full-time tenured, tenure-track, and promotion eligible non-tenure track faculty who have demonstrated excellence in the promotion of globalization of teaching, research, and/or service.
