Participate in Our Research Studies

We appreciate your interest in helping the ECHO Lab learn more about the health and well-being of youth and families. We’re currently recruiting participants for the “UH Black Family Health Study.”

What is the Study About?

Dr. Elizabeth Jelsma at the Ethnicity, Culture, & Health Outcomes Lab at the University of Houston is studying how experiences of racial/ethnic discrimination within Black and African American families affect mental health. In this research study, teen–parent pairs will share their experiences to help us understand how discrimination impacts both family members and how families cope together.

Why Participate?

  • Teens who complete at least 7 days of daily surveys will earn a $30 electronic Visa gift card; 11 days will earn $60; and completing all 14 days plus the post-survey earns $100.
  • Parents who complete at least 7 days will earn a $50 gift card; 11 days will earn $100; and completing all 14 days plus the post-survey earns $150.
  • Your participation will help us better understand family coping strategies in the face of discrimination.

Who Can Participate?

  • Black or African American families in Houston consisting of:
    • Adolescents aged 14–18 years old
    • Parents or legal guardians aged 30 years or older
  • Must have reliable daily access to a smartphone or the internet.
