Hope and Despair

Can Jews and Palestinians find a way forward? And can they build a future together without confronting the past? This session brings together two experts—Mira Sucharov, Professor of Political Science at Carleton University, and Omar Dajani, Professor of Law at McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific—for a conversation about the past, present, and future of Israel-Palestine and about how we, in North America, talk across difference.

Dajani, a Palestinian American who formerly advised the Palestine Liberation Organization in peace talks with Israel, and Sucharov, a Canadian Jew who spent three years living, studying and working in Israel, have visited the region together four times as they develop a book and podcast about their experiences. In this forum, they will examine contested terms such as apartheid, colonialism, genocide, and terrorism, reflect on their political differences and stress the importance of finding common values.
