Dr. Carl Mark Carroll

Dr. Carl Mark Carroll, 1970

Born in 1919, Dr. Carl M. Carroll grew up in Halstead and Yokum, Texas. College graduates, both of his parents worked as teachers. Dr. Carroll earned his medical degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1951. After graduation from Meharry, Dr. Carroll completed his internship at Kansas City #2 Hospital which allowed him to start a general practice when he moved to Houston in 1953. His practice was located on Lyons Street in Houston’s Fifth Ward.

Dr. Carroll was a member of National Medical Association (NMA), Lone Star State Medical Association, and the Houston Medical Forum. When he attended NMA meetings, he often took his young daughter, Natalie, with him. Dr. Carroll was a founder of Lockwood Hospital in Houston. He practiced medicine in Houston’s Fifth Ward for forty-five years.

Like many black doctors, Dr. Carroll also was a businessman and a banker. He was the president of Riverside National Bank, the first black-owned bank west of the Mississippi River. He was a founding member of National Bankers Association. Dr. Carroll played an active role in various civic organizations. He served on the Board of Trustees of Depelchin Faith Home and YMCA on Wheeler Street.

When students from Texas Southern University (TSU) staged sit-ins to segregate various public facilities in Houston, Dr. Carroll joined other HMF members to provide financial support for the protestors, including funds for bail.

Dr. Carroll died of a heart disease on September 15, 1997. His daughter, L. Natalie Carroll, a nationally recognized obstetrician and gynecologist, also is a Meharry alumnus and practices in Houston.
