A large part of the focus at the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication is fulfilling the three pillars of a strategic plan to get students real-life work experience before they graduate. To ensure these students are ready for the field, Valenti offers events that will help them succeed in the future.

Two upcoming events that students can plan for and attend include the Communication Career Workshop sponsored by Pierpont, and the Marketing and Communications Mixer co hosted by Valenti, Career Services and the C.T. Bauer College of Business.

The Pierpont Workshop is an opportunity to sharpen career skills before a student starts the process of a job hunt.

The skills students can work on and pick up include; interview prep, networking and social media skills, among others that could aid in the workplace.

The workshop will be held on April 13th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the UH Alumni Center and will be able to help students review their resumes, work on cover letters and talk about how to network. Students can register for the event online at Eventbrite.

The Marketing and Communications Mixer will act as a job fair with employers on hand. This event is something students should come professionally dressed for, with copies of their resumes to hand out to interested companies.

A part of the mixer will conduct mock interviews to prepare students for success. There will also be an opportunity to take professional headshots that students can use in any setting, especially if a new LinkedIn profile picture is needed.

The Marketing and Communications Mixer will be happening on March 23rd from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Houston Room in Student Center South. Students can register for the event on Cougar Pathway.

Both events will help aide students in the career department, as one can help them set up an internship that will build their resume and gain work experience, and the other prepares them with good skills and building good documents such as a resume or a cover letter.
