Impact Award Recipients

 

Each year, the Valenti School of Communication awards the Valenti Impact Award during its spring gala. The Valenti Impact Award recognizes someone who has used communication to make a signficant contribution to our culture and society.

Paul Siefken

2019: Paul Siefken, CEO & President of Fred Rogers Productions

As President and CEO, Paul Siefken ensures that Fred Rogers Productions presents the very best in educational children’s media on broadcast and digital platforms — and beyond. Siefken most recently served as VP, Broadcast and Digital Media, steering the broadcast content and managing the digital production pipelines for  Daniel Tiger’s NeighborhoodPeg + Cat, and  Odd Squad, working with respective production partners for each. He also spearheaded initiatives that have taken all three into communities around the country, working with public television stations, museums, science centers, libraries, volunteer organizations, and early childhood groups to provide meaningful content that supports the aims and priorities of the respective institutions. Before joining Fred Rogers Productions in 2013, Siefken spent nearly ten years at PBS, most recently as Director of Children’s Programming, where he managed the development of several PBS KIDS series, including  The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About ThatSid the Science KidWordGirlWild KrattsFetch! With Ruff Ruffman, and  Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Prior to that, he managed sponsored promotions and media relations as well as produced interactive content for Cartoon Network. Before entering children’s media, Paul worked as a high school English teacher in both Georgia and North Carolina. He holds a BA in English from Duke University.

Jose Diaz Balart

2018: José Diaz-Balart, Telemundo & NBC Nightly News Anchor

José Díaz-Balart is the host of “The Rundown with Jose Diaz-Balart” on msnbc in addition to anchoring two programs on Telemundo, “Enfoque con José Díaz-Balart” and “Noticiero Telemundo.” Díaz-Balart began his career in 1984 and has since become one of the most respected voices in Hispanic journalism in the United States. Over the past 30 years, he has witnessed and reported historic events for prestigious news media such as NBCNews and Telemundo. His achievements include being the only journalist to serve as news anchor on two national television networks in Spanish and English on the same day for an entire season. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the George Foster Peabody Award, Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award, and the Broadcasting & Cable/Multichannel News 2012 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hispanic Television. Most recently, he was honored with the 2014 Life Achievement Award by the Hispanic Federation and the Communications Award by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).
Celina Schocken

2017: Celina Schocken, CEO of Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon

Celina Schocken was the CEO of Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon, a newly launched global nonprofit that is an affiliate of the George W. Bush Institute that focuses on cervical and breast cancer prevention and treatment. Previously, she served as Director of Policy and Advocacy at Merck for Mothers, where she led the Saving Mothers, Giving Life public-private partnership. Prior to Merck, Schocken was Director of International Organizations at Population Services International (PSI), where she managed PSI’s work with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and other multilateral organizations. She has also served as Chief Advisor to the Rwandan Minister of State for HIV/AIDS and Other Epidemics, whom she assisted to draft national policies related to HIV/AIDS, and to coordinate the implementation of multi-million-dollar HIV/AIDS programs throughout the country. Prior to her position with the Government of Rwanda, Schocken held positions as Country Director of Columbia University's programs in Rwanda, and with the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation, where she co-authored Rwanda’s national plan for HIV/AIDS treatment and care. In 2005, she was a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Evan Smith

2016: Evan Smith, CEO and Co-Founder of the Texas Tribune

Evan Smith is CEO and co-founder of the Texas Tribune, a pioneering nonprofit, nonpartisan digital news organization whose deep coverage of Texas politics and public policy can be found at its website, texastribune.org, and in newspapers and on TV and radio stations across the state. Since its launch in 2009, the Tribune has won international acclaim and numerous honors, including a Peabody Award, twenty-one national Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association and three general excellence awards from the Online News Association. Evan is also the host of "Overheard with Evan Smith," a weekly half-hour interview program that airs on PBS stations around the country.
