What is Fraternity & Sorority Life?
Fraternities and sororities have a long and important tradition as part of American higher education. Since their origins in the late 1700’s, fraternities and sororities have been organizations designed to enhance the personal, social, and moral development of college students while positively impacting their greater campus and local communities. Fraternity & sorority life serves as a premier leadership development experience designed to enhance the skills necessary to succeed as a UH student and UH alum. The fraternity & sorority experience is grounded in the following core values:
Intellectual Development
Fraternity and sorority members are committed to their intellectual growth both inside and outside of the classroom.
Leadership Development
Fraternity & sorority members actively practice values-based leadership and look for opportunities to be involved on campus.
Service and Citizenship
Fraternity & sorority members actively participate in community service opportunities and understand social issues facing their communities.
Meaningful Relationships
Fraternity & sorority members show strong brotherhood/sisterhood/siblinghood through the embracing of diverse ideas and beliefs and care and concern for each other’s physical and emotional well-being.
Moral and Ethical Decision-Making
Fraternity & sorority members are instilled with the core values of their organization and of the University of Houston, and practice them in their day-to-day decision making.
