The booth/tent hosted by University of Houston’s Division of Energy and Innovation was a massive hit during Energy Day. Thousands of K-12 students and families from across the Houston area, visited with UH Energy experts and students during Houston’s largest annual free festival showcasing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
UH Energy Opens 2023-24 Symposium Series with Deep Dive into Plastics Circularity
Plastics circularity is a hot button issue in the world today as the energy industry works to curtail plastic waste and create a sustainable future for all. Unsurprisingly, the University of Houston hosted a timely and insightful conversation revolving around plastics, chemicals and circularity recently. After all, Houston is home to the world’s largest concentration of plastics manufacturing facilities.
UH Students Showcase Innovative Solutions at Energy Research Day
As challenges and needs emerges within society, it is paramount to investigate solutions that can keep up with the constantly evolving energy sector and move the world toward a sustainable future. After a 2-year hiatus, Houston’s Energy Day was back in full swing October 15, celebrating its 10-year anniversary at Sam Houston Park. Shale Reservoirs Could be ‘Substantial Source of Lithium

Kyung Jae Lee, an assistant professor of petroleum engineering at UH, is exploring the potential of petroleum-based rock brines as a new source of lithium. Lee's published findings show that highly concentrated lithium was found in the produced water (water produced as a byproduct during the extraction of oil and natural gas) along with produced natural gas and oil.

Cullen College of Engineering Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Yan Yao has teamed with peers to publish a paper in Nature Communications regarding a new model for safe, cost-efficient and long-lasting all-solid-state-sodium batteries (ASSSBs). The findings document results of developing a glassy electrolyte whose electrochemical stability may be a huge step in commercializing ASSSBs.

Mindfulness On The Rig: Research Project Aims to Improve Safety, Health and Well-being of Offshore Oil and Gas Workers

Through a grant from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, UH psychology professor Christiane Spitzmueller led a six-month study of offshore oil and gas workers alongside offshore worker safety expert Rhona Flin, professor of business at Scotland’s Robert Gordon University, and executives at Baker Hughes and Diamond Offshore. The study findings suggest that workers who practice more mindfulness experience less emotional exhaustion, fatigue and psychological strain.

Under the leadership of team captain Maddie Bishop, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences’ Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) team placed second at the annual American Association of Petroleum Geologists IBA Competition for the Gulf Coast Section. The five-member team consisted of graduate students in geology and geophysics, including Bishop (M.S.), Mei Liu (Ph.D.), Michael Fonseca (M.S.), Ben Miller (M.S.) and senior undergraduate student Brook Runyon.

Energy Advisory Board Spotlight - William Maloney

William “Bill” Maloney is on the board of directors of Trident Energy, ATX Energy and serves as an energy advisor to Warburg Pincus. Before that, he was executive vice president at Equinor, which was then known as Statoil, retiring in 2015. In that capacity he played a key role on Statoil’s Corporate Executive Committee, leading business area development and production in North America.
