Nonprofit Leadership Alliance

Since 1993, the David M. Underwood Chapter of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) at the University of Houston (UH) has prepared students for careers in the nonprofit sector through its Nonprofit Management Certificate and Credential Program. Open to undergraduate students from any major and, since Spring 2022, Master of Social Work (MSW) students at the UH Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW), the program leads to the nationally recognized Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential. 

The NLA develops future nonprofit leaders through competencies in communication, fundraising, governance, leadership, ethics, cultural competency, program development, volunteer and human resource management, financial management, and nonprofit operations. Students gain practical experience through coursework, leadership and volunteer opportunities, internships with local nonprofit organizations, mentorship, conferences, workshops, and professional development that connects them with leaders across the sector. 

Housed within the GCSW, the NLA supports the College's mission by strengthening the nonprofit workforce and preparing professionals to address the evolving needs of the Greater Houston community. Our alumni serve in nonprofit organizations across a wide range of leadership and service roles, helping create lasting community impact.
