Personal statement
Monit Cheung, PhD, LCSW is the Mary R. Lewis Endowed Professor in Children & Youth at the Graduate College of Social Work, University of Houston, USA. She is Director of the Child & Family Center for Innovative Research and Principal Investigator of the Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Project in Houston, Texas. She received her doctoral and master’s degrees in social work and a master’s degree in public administration from The Ohio State University and a post-doc certificate on Geriatric Education from the University of Iowa. She is Director of the and Principal Investigator of the Child Welfare Education Project, a state partnership program funded federally by Title IV-E for training child welfare social workers. She has been a social worker since 1979 and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1993 specializing in play therapy, family counseling, geriatric counseling, child/adolescent counseling, child protection, sexual and domestic violence, and incest survivor treatment. She has practiced as a consultant trainer for the Hong Kong Social Welfare Department and the Hong Kong Police Force. Using an experiential and practice-oriented approach to teaching, Dr. Cheung has taught at the graduate level since 1986. She has presented in 346 workshops and conferences and written 482 articles, books, book chapters, and research reports on child protection and parenting issues in English and Chinese. Her research interests are related to treatment effectiveness in the areas of child sexual abuse, creative family therapy, therapeutic touch, and immigrant adjustment.

Research interests
Dr. Cheung's research interests include the assessment and treatment in areas of child sexual abuse, elderly Chinese immigrants and their service needs, immigrant adjustment, child protective service training, creative family therapy, and therapeutic touch, and other clinical social work practices.
