Your First Year

Begin your academic journey with confidence. The New Student Programs team is committed to supporting first-time-in-college students as they transition into university life.

Our goal is to help you feel connected, confident, and prepared for your first year. Learn more about what we do below.

Your Voice, Your Experience

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE). Your input matters. By completing the BCSSE, you help us better understand your expectations and needs as a new student. The insights you share guide how we support your transition and shape programs that enhance your first-year experience. Click here to complete the survey if you are new student.

Your Network for a Strong Start and Lasting Friendships

Cougar DENS is your opportunity to build connections and community at the University of Houston. This program welcomes new students into a virtual community, fosters meaningful connections through events, provides guidance from experienced student leaders, and offers personalized support from trained Peer Assistant Leaders.

Support That Makes a Difference

Connect with someone who’s been there. As current students, Peer Assistant Leaders (PALs) have successfully navigated their own pathways at UH and are ready to help you create yours. They’ll reach out at the beginning of the year and follow up during key moments, providing personalized support throughout your first year.

New Coogs: First Year Guide

Launch Pad to Success introduces you to your PAL  and helps you build a strong foundation during your first six weeks. After that, we encourage you to follow Cougar Tracks, a year-long guide designed to help you make the most of every stage of your first year.

We also want to continue the conversation with your family members and supporters. That's why we've created resources to help them better understand your first year and how they can support you along the way.
