Student Travel Within Clery Geography
Under the Clery Act, the University must count and disclose certain crimes reported to have occurred within Clery geography.
Crimes may occur off-campus but within Clery geography during University-sponsored student travel. Under certain circumstances, University-sponsored student travel must be reported to the Clery Compliance Officer before travel so they can request from local law enforcement information about Clery crimes for that location during the specified time period.
When to Report Student Travel
Report student travel that meets the following requirements to be within Clery geography:
- University-sponsored trip off-campus;
- Trip has at least one overnight stay; and
- University has control over any housing or academic space used by students during
the trip.
- “Control” means there is a written agreement for the use of space (no matter how informal) either directly with the end provider or through a third-party contractor
- Examples of written agreements for use of non-campus space include hotel rentals, lease for housing or academic space, and even an e-mail agreement for use of space free of charge.
