APhA-ASP Chapter Wins Award for Medication Safety Outreach at Regional Meeting

November 18 — The UH College of Pharmacy Chapter of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) was recognized with the 2019-20 Generation Rx Regional Award for its community outreach efforts to raise awareness of the importance of prescription medication safety.

Generation Rx is a national educational program that increases public awareness of prescription medication misuse and adherence. Specific topics of emphasis included inappropriate use of medications such as opioids and antibiotics as well as teaching the community about safe and proper disposal of prescription medications.

The UHCOP chapter's initiative — led by then-senior chairs Samson Ogori and John Samson and junior chairs Amanda Bradley and Michelle Yu — provided education and screenings, including brown-bag medication reviews, to nearly 1,000 event attendees during the 2019-20 academic year. Among the events at which initiative members provided prescription medication safety outreach were the Houston Mayor's Back 2 School Fest, the American Pharmacists Month Extravaganza at the UH campus, and a Harris County senior community center.
