UH Response to Swine Flu

April 27, 2009

To the UH Community:

We recognize the seriousness of the swine flu situation and are monitoring the latest developments with all our available resources. Our Emergency Management Team has activated its emergency preparedness protocols and is communicating with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as public health and emergency officials in Texas. At this point, we have had no cases of swine flu reported in Houston, but it is crucial that we stay calm, stay informed and take proper precautions.

Here on campus, please continue to exercise preventive hygiene measures such as covering any cough or sneeze and washing your hands frequently. Use of a hand sanitizer is strongly recommended. At this time, there is no need to use facemasks, according to the CDC. Most importantly, stay home if you believe you are sick. Please remain at home until the illness passes and you are no longer contagious (which could be as long as a week).

We will continue to follow conditions closely and we encourage you to stay alert for periodic updates. We have created a Web site (http://www.uh.edu/news-updates/) to provide useful information about swine flu and our circumstances at UH, and we will communicate with you directly on any significant developments that may impact the region or our university.

Although we realize that this is a troubling development, there is no need for undue alarm. Please stay informed and join me in taking proper precautions.

Warm Regards,

Renu Khator
President, University of Houston
