Overview
The Advancing Community Engagement and Service (ACES) Institute offers paid job opportunities to University of Houston students to help them gain real-world experience while also meeting the needs of the community.
Available Position
The Cougar Tutors initiative, managed by the ACES Institute, employs University of Houston students as literacy and academic tutors in high-need public schools. The current open position is Cougar Tutor.
Job Description
Cougar Tutors work 12 hours per week at an assigned elementary, middle or high school campus to provide academic support through small-group and full-class instruction during the academic year from September to December and February to June. This is an in-person position at one of our partner schools. Each tutor is assigned to a specific campus by ACES staff. Before beginning, tutors complete 15 hours of required paid training. In addition to instruction, tutors collect daily data to report their experiences and measure student growth over time.
Compensation
The hourly rate for the Cougar Tutor position is $18 an hour.
Required Criteria
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to qualify for an interview:
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S. at an on-campus job.
- Must be fully enrolled in courses at UH-Main or UH-Downtown (undergraduate or graduate).
- Must have completed at least one semester at UH-Main or UH-Downtown (prior experience from other institutions is accepted).
- Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
- Must be able to work 12 hours per week between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Must have a personal vehicle.
Preferred Criteria (not required)
If you do not meet the following criteria but meet the minimum criteria above, you may still be aligible for an inteview:
- You have proof that you scored a 3, 4, or 5 on at least one Advanced Placement exam in high school.
- You are a student in the College of Education (UH-Main) or College of Public Service (UH-Downtown).
- You speak Spanish or Pashto fluently.
- You have experience working with K-12 students (tutoring or mentoring preferred).
- You intend to be a K-12 teacher following graduation.
