Videoconferencing

Video conferencing for Instructors

This is an hour-long, hands-on session to give you some practice using Skype For Business and Google Meet. Each session will cover how to:

  • join a meeting
  • schedule a meeting
  • start and control a meeting
  • manage participants
  • use chat
  • share your screen
  • record a meeting

After the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Comfortably use Skype for Business and/or Google Meet for web conferencing, live class sessions, or meetings.

Technical requirements for this workshop:

Attendees must bring a laptop running at least Windows 10 or macOS 10.11. You’ll need to have full administrator rights (or at least the ability to install software and join an enterprise wireless network). Skype for Business and Google Meet require a standard laptop camera or USB 2.0 video camera, a microphone, and an audio output device in order to utilize its full range of calling and meeting features.

A Quick Guide to Video Captioning

Nowadays, video captioning is in high demand in education as we attempt to meet the accessibility requirements. In this workshop, you will be guided step by step to add captions to a video clip through three free tools: YouTube video captioning, Google Doc Voice-typing, and Office 365 Dictation. You are welcome to bring your own laptop and video for guided practice.

Learn How to Convert a Scanned File into an Accessible OCR

Presenter: Fang Fang

It is common for instructors to include scanned text and images in their teaching materials. However, scanned files  often cannot be read by software used by visually impaired students. This workshop will show the procedure for using Adobe Acrobat Pro to convert a scanned file to an optical character recognition (OCR) file, and check for meeting accessibility standards.

Creating Accessible PowerPoint Presentations

Come join us in this workshop to discover all the answers! We will walk you through the important steps to make your PowerPoint Presentations accessible to all learners.  Please bring your laptop and PowerPoint presentations to make them inclusive and accessible!

The Quickest Way to Meeting the Accessibility Standards!

As accessibility has gripped the educational community and gaining more and more attention. Faculty are facing a dilemma. Retype my docs, discard old scanned docs, is it accessible or is it not… What’s a faculty member to do? Join our CheatSheet workshop! Learn how to take your collection of teaching materials and make them accessible for all learners. This workshop introduces a quick and easy CheatSheet guide for commonly used software, including Word, PDF, Excel, and PowerPoint. By following the instructions on the CheatSheet, faculty can easily update to ACCESSIBLE documents.

Create Perception Surveys and More with Qualtrics

Presenters: Courtney Wilson and Ginger Lucas

In this session we will demonstrate how Qualtrics is being used in the Graduate College of Social Work to create assessment tools. Faculty use this tool for perception surveys, midterm evaluations, and more. After the demonstration, participants will be guided through the steps of creating similar survey tools for their colleges. Question development and dissemination, as well as data analysis will be explored. Topics for brainstorming include avoiding survey fatigue and maximizing survey responses.

In this session, we will address common questions about OER and provide information on how to apply for the UH Alternative Textbook Incentive Program.

Turnitin is an online plagiarism-detection application that can help you create a culture of integrity and authenticity in your classes. This tool can be used either in conjunction with Blackboard or outside of Blackboard.  This session will provide an overview of different functionalities of Turnitin and will also address your questions.

Our mission is to help prepare faculty for teaching and developing quality and effective online courses based on best practices. We will discuss what to expect in the OTP and how to create a quality-based course with aligned content in BlackBoard.

Present, Comment, Collaborate: Introduction to VoiceThread

Come to learn about VoiceThread, an online collaborative tool that allows users to create and comment on multimedia slide shows, integrated with images, documents, audio, video and PowerPoint files. It has been widely used in higher education to create engaging discussions, support interactive online presence, and build collaboration. Exemplar use in real class will also be shared to provide more insight on the VoiceThread application.
