Project Overview
During this three year long project, we are training two cohorts of Latinx adaptive sport leaders in the Houston area to model Community Healthcare Worker (CHW) and become peer mentors in their communities.
Current programing will be modified and standardized, and an innovative system based on the existing CHW model will be created to ensure mentorship and resources are carried out properly for each participant.
Two cohorts each with 30 LwMI (60 total participants) be recruited and receive the intervention.
- The first cohort will receive an 18-month immediate intervention
- The second will have a six-month delay in receiving the 12-month intervention, and thus serve as the control group
The interventions will consist of opportunities for sport participation in conjunction with formal mentorship. A randomized wait list-controlled with repeated measures (pre, post) mixed within- and between-subjects design will be employed to examine the intervention effect.
With well-rounded resources and environment (e.g., population access, programing experiences, supporting system), the project will not only provide a platform and direct service in improving LwMIs’ lived experiences, but will also build an innovated system that is sustainable, applicable to other group contexts, and powerful as a tool to drive long term social change.
