Dr. Hargrove F. Wooten
Dr. Hargrove F. Wooten was born in Jacksonville, Florida on October 9, 1925. He grew up attending public schools in Jacksonville, where he began to think about becoming a doctor. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Xavier University in New Orleans and then went on to Meharry Medical College in Nashville to attain a doctorate in medicine.
After earning his MD, Wooten moved to Houston. He continued his education by earning a Master of Science degree at Texas Southern University and completing his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the Texas Medical Center.
Dr. Wooten served in a rotating internship in Houston and was the first African American to intern at the Memorial Hospital system. He spent his medical career as a practicing pharmacist and CEO of Wooten’s Pharmacy Chain.
Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Wooten showed great leadership in his service to the professional medical community. He was president of the Houston Pharmaceutical Association, the Lone Star State Pharmaceutical Association, and the Houston Medical Forum. Additionally, he was a member of 16 honorary, professional, and civic organizations, including the NAACP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Chi Delta Mu Professional Fraternity, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In 1994-1996, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity elected Dr. Wooten as their Grand Sire Archon, an honorable appointment in that organization.
Dr. Wooten and Eleanor, his wife of 49 years, raised and mentored three daughters. He died in March 2000 at the age of 74.
