Dr. Virginia Stull

Dr. Virginia Stull was the first African-American female to graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB). During her education at UTMB Dr. Stull, the only African-American women in her class had many unique experiences based on her race and gender. On four separate occasions, administrators or physicians mistakenly assumed Dr. Stull was a nurse’s aide because they did not recognize that a black woman might be a physician or a physician in training. They reprimanded her for not performing duties appropriate to an aide before she explained her position. Dr. Stull received her medical degree in 1966.
