Dr. Mae F. McMillan
Dr. Mae F. McMillan has had a long and distinguished career as a child psychiatrist following her residency at the Baylor University College of Medicine in 1966. She is the only African-American child psychiatrist to have completed part of her training at the Hempstead Clinic in London. She has received accolades for her teaching and research and for her pioneering role, along with three other physicians, as part of the first generation of black child and adolescent psychiatrists. She has published many articles in the field of psychiatry.
Over the years, Dr. McMillan served on the faculties of Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Texas Woman’s University. She was director of the early childhood therapy clinic at Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences (TRIMS) in the 1970s.
Beginning in 1978, Dr. McMillan chaired the American Psychiatric Association’s Committee of Black Psychiatrists for several years. During the 1970s, she was active in this committee in creating resolutions to combat racial discrimination in her field and to increase the number of minority psychiatrists in the United States. Currently she is Vice Chairman of The Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County (MHMRA), chair of that organization’s Program Committee, and board liaison to the Medical Planning Advisory Council.
For her accomplishments as a Houston physician, McMillan was honored in February 1979 at the YWCA’s Outstanding Women’s Luncheon. She recently received the “Psychiatric Excellence Award” from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians in honor of her outstanding contributions to Psychiatry at the society’s November 2004 annual convention in San Antonio.
