Dr. Oliver Hunter Sr.

Dr. Oliver Hunter Sr. was born in 1961 while his father was in medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch. His family settled in Houston, where his father, Dr. Oliver Hunter Jr., was a practicing cardiologist in local hospitals.  Although he did not want to be a cardiologist, Dr. Oliver Hunter Sr. knew he wanted to be a doctor.  He was the only one of his three siblings to pursue a career in medicine.  He attended Strake Jesuit High School in Houston and then went to college at University of Texas in Austin.  After graduation he entered medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and graduated in 1987.

Dr. Hunter Sr. completed a one-year internship at University of Texas, San Antonio and worked for a time as an emergency room doctor before deciding to specialize in radiology.  His radiology residency was at Howard University in Washington, D. C.  He had never studied in a predominantly black educational setting before his residency and found the experience at Howard was positive and rewarding.

Dr. Hunter later received a fellowship through the University of Texas in Houston and worked at Hermann Hospital.  Throughout his 20 years of practice Dr. Hunter worked in the emergency room off and on for a period of 13 years and has worked as a hospital-based diagnostic radiologist.

Radiology has afforded him a more predictable schedule and a chance to do some small medical procedures.  With a family of his own he appreciates having more flexibility with his schedule.  Dr. Hunter is currently practicing in Baytown and is a member of the Houston Medical Forum.
