Visiting Student

A number of inter-institutional graduate student enrollment agreements have been established enabling graduate students from one institution to take graduate- level courses at one of the other participating institutions. Students must be registered full-time (nine credit hours) between their home institution and their host institution during the semester they register for courses under the inter-institutional agreement.

Registration Rules and Guidelines 

  • Requested class must not be offered by the home institution during the requested term/semester.
  • Requested class must be necessary for completion of graduate degree.
  • Visiting students may register for a total of no more than 12 credit hours outside their home institution, as part of the inter-institutional agreement.
  • Number of credits allowed per term/semester may vary depending on the policy of the host school. 
  • All approval signatures must be completed. 
  • Foreign students taking inter-institutional courses: You must check with your International Services Office regarding additional paperwork. Most host schools will require a copy of your I-20/DS-2019, visa stamp, passport ID page and 1-94.

  • Students may not take a Pass/Fail or an Audit course. 

Enrollment Process for a non-University of Houston students 

This section details the procedures and the required signatures necessary for a student whose home university is not the University of Houston, and who desires to participate in the inter-institutional graduate program with UH during the fall/spring semesters. If you are a UH student seeking to enroll at another institution, information is available on the Inter-Institutional webpage. 

STEP 1 
Complete the Inter-Institutional Graduate Program Registration Form. 

STEP 2 
Obtain the approval signature of your academic advisor at your home institution, and the International Students Office (if applicable). 

STEP 3 
Obtain the signature of your department chairperson at your home institution. 

STEP 4 
Obtain permission from the instructor of record at the University of Houston. 

STEP 5 
Submit the form to the Office of the Registrar at your home institution for full-time enrollment verification. 

STEP 6 
Submit the completed Inter-Institutional Graduate Program Registration Form to the Office of the University Registrar at the University of Houston by email to uhour@uh.edu. Your student record will then be created, and you will be registered for the course. 

*Upon submission to the Registrar’s Office at UH, international students should also submit their passport, visa, I-20 and I-94 arrival/departure card as part of check-in process. 

Transcript Information 

Two weeks after the close of a semester and the submission of final grades, the University of Houston Office of the University Registrar will forward an official academic transcript to your home institution. 

Fees 

Fees are paid at your home institution. Please contact the Cashier’s Office at your home institution for additional information. 

Frequently Asked Questions 

When is the deadline to submit an inter-institutional enrollment request? 

Inter-Institutional enrollment forms, complete with all required signatures (and international student documentation, if applicable), must be received by the deadline to add courses which are provided on the Academic Calendar. Please note that you should also adhere to registration deadlines set by your home institution. 

When will my enrollment be processed? 

Inter-Institutional enrollment forms, complete with all required signatures (and international student documentation, if applicable), are typically processed within three to five business days. Requests received during peak periods should allow up to five to six business days for processing. 

What if I no longer want college credit for the course that I am enrolled in? 

Inter-Institutional students may not take courses as Pass/Fail or Audit. Students who no longer wish to receive credit should submit a request to drop their course. 

Inter-Institutional students must send a request to drop their course to uhour@uh.edu to have their withdrawal processed by the Office of the University Registrar. Inter-Institutional students are not permitted to perform registration actions themselves. 

Inter-Institutional students must adhere to the registration deadlines that are outlined in the Academic Calendar, as well registration deadlines that are set by their home institution.
