MSW Application Checklist

Thank you for your interest in our MSW Program. The University of Houston uses CollegeNET for the processing of graduate applications. Proceed to the link on this page to create a CollegeNET account, submit an application, review a submitted application, and access post-submission functionality.

The following will be needed to complete the application:

The Application Fee for the MSW Program is $60.00 for domestic applicants and $135.00 for international applicants.  Applicants submit the fee with the online application.  

Scanned copies of official transcripts can be uploaded as PDF files and may be used by programs to make admission decisions. If admitted, however, you will not be able to enroll without the official transcript(s) showing undergraduate degree conferral on file. Within the state of Texas, the fastest way to send your transcript is
electronically. Please inquire at your previous institution about this option.
Electronic transcripts can be delivered via email to gradschool@uh.edu.

Test Score Requirements include the following. 

Official Graduate Record Exam scores (GRE) should be submitted by the testing agency. Scores should be less than five years old. The University of Houston’s institutional code for the GRE is 6870. Information about costs and test dates at UH may be obtained from UH Student Service Center (Room 204), (713) 743-5444. The GCSW does not require a minimum score on the GRE. 

TOEFL or IELTS Scores are required from international applicants to satisfy English proficiency requirements via satisfactory scores on the TOEFL or IELTS standardized exams. The UH school code for the TOEFL is also 6870. Please see the UH Graduate School’s English Language Proficiency page for more information on the requirement.

Letters of Recommendation are gathered electronically. You will be asked to provide  e-mail addresses of three references (professors or professionals). If you graduated from college within the last 5 years, one reference should be a professor or instructor. If you are applying for Advanced Standing, one of your three references must be your faculty advisor or chairperson of your BSW Program. For all applicants: if more than one of the three recommendations is personal, the file will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. At least two references should be academic or professional.

For your Personal Statement please address the following questions in 3 – 4 double-spaced pages. Use proper references as appropriate.

The profession of social work is rooted in a set of core values and tenants. Review the mission of the profession and the college, then describe to us how this fits with your professional and personal goals. In addition, tell us how you plan to be fully engaged in all the academic requirements of the MSW program, including field practicum and graduate level coursework while in the program. You may include any additional information relevant for the committee to understand regarding your fit for the program and profession.

The Resume (Recommended length 1-2 pages) should include the following:

  • Educational background including major, minor, type of degree, honors and distinctions
  • Paid or volunteer experience in social service agencies or other settings (include beginning and ending dates, whether full-time or part-time, number of hours per week)
  • Other work experience
  • Community and/or college activities
  • Reading interests (give specific examples)

International Applicants are strongly encouraged to upload the following documents, which will be required to obtain a student visa if admitted:

  • A scanned copy of a passport size photo
  • Passport copy
  • Letter of Financial Backing

Conditional Admission Applicants: If the last 60 hours of your undergraduate GPA is less than a 3.0, but at least a 2.6, you will need to apply for conditional admission. To do so, please submit an additional letter for which instructions can be found on our website.

Transfer Applicants: Please address within your personal statement the reason you are requesting to transfer to the University of Houston. Additional documents will need to be submitted. Refer to our website for instructions.

Deadlines

Fall: Applications are due by March 1st. Late applications will be considered based on space availability. 

To be considered for Advanced Standing, applicants must hold or be in the process of completing a BSW degree. Additional requirements can be found on our website.

All records and documents submitted to the GCSW become property of the University and may not be returned. The application fee covers part of the cost of handling the application and is therefore nonrefundable.
