Description

Cougar Village II is a residential facility consisting of approximately 274 two-bedroom shared bath units, approximately 36 individual units for resident assistants, and related amenities. The project is the second phase of two similar residential facilities located along Wheeler Street at the southern edge of the UH campus. Each student bedroom accommodates two beds for a total capacity of 1,144 beds.

Amenities include a lobby with a service desk, a central lounge and floor lounges on each floor, computer room, free laundry room, testing center, fitness area, Living Learning Center, floor kitchenettes, mail center, courtyards and Wi-Fi service. Adjacent exterior courtyards support outdoor activities and feature landscaping, seating, bike parking, artwork and site lighting. All site improvements complement and enhance the Cougar Village Phase 1 project, including a courtyard that creates a large gathering place for campus-wide events and informal recreation. The seven-story building also houses the offices of Student Housing and Residential Life as well as a testing center. Support spaces include housekeeping and custodial closets, mail center, storage/maintenance rooms, IT and building systems closets, trash room and chute, and elevators and equipment rooms.

Two unfurnished staff apartments approximately 1200 sf in size shall be included. Student rooms will be furnished with a single bed (twin x), desk, desk chair, and bookcase. Handicapped accessible bedroom units will be provided including 7 two-bedroom standard ADA units, 3 two-bedroom ADA units with “roll in showers”, 6 two-bedroom standard hearing impaired units, 1 one-bedroom RA unit with “roll in shower”, 1 one-bedroom hearing impaired RA unit, and 1 one–bedroom ADA hearing impaired RA unit.

Typical resident floors shall be designed to accommodate groups of 32 students per 1 student resident assistant.  These groups of approximately 32 students will share a common living room/lounge area with the bedrooms located nearby. Adjacent exterior courtyards will support outdoor activities and feature landscaping, seating, bike parking, artwork, and site lighting. Site paving will create and reinforce strong pedestrian / bicycle connections with campus. All site improvements shall complement and enhance the Cougar Village Phase 1 project, including a securable courtyard that creates a large gathering place for campus-wide events and informal recreation.

The building will be approximately 288,000 GSF and seven stories. The estimated project cost is $50,000,000 and the completed facility is expected to be available for occupancy Fall 2013.
