Learning Abroad experiences are educational, overseas travel programs that transform UH students into global citizens. CITE grant-funded co-curricular learning abroad opportunities take various forms, including courses, internships, service learning and conferences.

Learning Away experiences are faculty-led travel programs in the United States.
This new travel program is paired with IART 1300, The Arts in Society. IART 1300 fulfills a core requirement in Language, Philosophy and Culture category. Students who complete the course will be eligible to participate in the faculty-led learning abroad portion, The Arts in Rome.  A CITE grant to Melissa Noble (Coordinator of Interdisciplinary Initiatives) and Beckham Dossett (Associate Dean, Kathrine G. McGovern College of Arts) will support travel scholarships for students with high financial need.
This academically rigorous, culturally enriching faculty-led travel experience offers students a language emersion opportunity to practice Chinese in the classroom and with native speakers in the real world. The program lasts five weeks and offers eight language and culture courses in Taiwan. It is open to any UH student with an interest in Chinese language and culture.  A grant to Dr. Xiaohong ‘Sharon’ Wen (Director of Chinese Studies) and Dr. Melody Yunzi Li (Assistant Professor of Chinese) will support student travel and student-led activities that increase engagement with the Chinese Studies program.
Faculty members Dan Burleson and Alex Landon are leading a Learning Abroad opportunity for students through a course, titled Connecting Coastal Resilience: From the Greater Houston Area to The Netherland. This learning abroad opportunity is combined with regional site visits and expert talks in the Greater Houston Area prior to students going abroad to The Netherlands to learn how the Dutch design for a country that is one-third below sea level. Students will visit the Houston Ship Channel and engagement with Houston-area researchers, industry, and non-profit groups, to make meaningful connections to what they see in The Netherlands.
The goal of this co-curricular experience led by Dr. Jerrod A. Henderson is to learn how Columbian engineers are responding to the 14 Grand Challenges that impact the world. Students will explore projects to make solar energy economical, provide access to clean water, and improve infrastructure and also experience Colombian customs and traditions while having authentic cultural exchanges with students, faculty, staff, and industry professionals. Along with traveling to Colombia in May, students work on their Grand Challenge projects throughout the spring.
Led by Keri Myrick, this six-week program places students in non-patient care positions in a Jordan Health Aid Society International (JHASI) clinic and in the organization's headquarters. CITE funds will be used to support student scholarships to participate in this faculty-led Learning Abroad program.
This grant to Office of Learning Abroad funded thirty-six scholarships for undergraduate students participating in Faculty Led Programs Abroad, with the goal of increasing the number of students participating in this high impact co-curricular experience.
This grant to Dustin Gish (Honors College) will fund forty scholarships for students participating in faculty-led domestic travel and will support the development of new faculty-led Learning Away experiences. These trips are open to all undergraduate students.
The Human Development and Consumer Sciences department recognizes exposure to global markets, culture, and business practices as pivotal to undergraduate success. This project led by Dr. Barbara Stewart, Dr. Olivia Johnson, Dr. Daiane Polesello , Dr. Melika Shirmohammadi  proposes a 10-day study abroad trip and a 4-week supplemental seminar during the Spring of 2023 where students have the opportunity to prepare for their study abroad trip. As professionals in the global workforce, this trip allows students to exchange and leverage best practices across nations and cultures in retailing and human resource development.
This new faculty-led travel program is hosted by Les Arts George V, the arts organization associated with the American Cathedral in Paris, France. Prior to travel, students will prepare for a performance during the cathedral’s Sunday concert series, which will occur at the end of the experience. This grant is led by College of Arts faculty Courtney Crappell (Piano and Piano Pedagogy) and Dominique McCormick (Voice) and will fund scholarships for students with high financial need.
