Fellow Cougars –

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. That historic event still looms large in our collective memory, and America has been changed dramatically by 9/11 and its aftermath. Those changes continue to shape how we live and have had a profound effect on our country, our community and our campus. Many in our own Cougar family have served in the military and in public service to protect our freedom at home and abroad, and we remain grateful for their contributions and commitment.

On this solemn occasion, I invite you to honor the sacrifices that were made and the lessons we have learned.
Some may do this in personal contemplation and others may choose to participate in the many commemorative events being held across the country. Here at the University of Houston, for example, our Moores School of Music is sponsoring the concert performance “The Things We Have: In Memoriam, September 11, 2001” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Moores Opera House. And the university is hosting a panel discussion of “The Role of the Media in Preventing Another Sept. 11” at 3 p.m. Monday in the UH Hilton Hotel Plaza Room.
