Racial Division and Inequality Are Focus of 2018 McGovern Lecture

Professor, Author and Activist Sheryll D. Cashin Headlines Oct. 25 Event

Sheryll D. Cashin, professor, author and activist will headline this year's McGovern Lecture at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25.

Noted law professor, author and activist Sheryll D. Cashin will address race relations and inequality in America at this year’s John P. McGovern Annual Award Lectureship in Family, Health and Human Values at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25 at the University of Houston Student Center Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

Cashin, a child of political activists during the civil rights era, will discuss the modern-day racial caste system in her lecture “The Descendants: From Slavery to Jim Crow to Dark Ghettos, A Call for 21st Century Abolition.”

“Professor Cashin is one of America’s most insightful voices on race, class and society,” said Antonio D. Tillis, dean, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and M.D. Anderson Professor in Hispanic Studies. “Her nuanced, intellectually rigorous scholarship is a force for good in the fight to understand the complexities surrounding racial division and inequality. Cashin’s didactic and scholarly dedication to improving human values is in perfect harmony with the John P. McGovern Lecture’s mission to inspire social change through dialogue.”
