UH Offers Top Graduate Programs in Law, Social Work, Engineering

Annual US News Rankings Highlight Range of Graduate Programs

Seven graduate programs at the University of Houston have been named Top 50 programs in their disciplines in the 2019 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

The UH Law Center had three Top 10 programs, including the No. 2 ranked health care law program in the country.

“We are a terrific law school,” Law Center Dean Leonard Baynes said. “I am very proud of the Law Center’s recognition in these areas of expertise.”

The magazine’s annual rankings of graduate programs was released Tuesday.

In addition to the health care law program, the Law Center also was noted for its intellectual property law program, which ranked No. 5, and its part-time law program, which is tied for No. 7.

The UH Graduate College of Social Work was ranked No. 24 among institutions offering a master’s degree in social work.

“Our latest ranking is a testament to everything our faculty, staff, students and alumni do every day to realize our vision of achieving social, racial, economic and political justice,” said Alan Dettlaff, dean of the Graduate College of Social Work and the inaugural Maconda Brown O’Connor Endowed Dean’s Chair. “This vision inspires all that we do and is at the core of our commitment to preparing diverse social work leaders in practice and research.”

Three Cullen College of Engineering programs ranked in the Top 50: petroleum engineering, at No. 13; chemical engineering, No. 34; and industrial engineering, No. 47.

Each year, U.S. News ranks professional school programs in business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing, including specialties in each area.  Other disciplines are ranked periodically.

The rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students.
