UH Releases 2017-18 National Commercial: "What is Power?"

“What is Power?” That’s the question asked and answered in the University of Houston’s 2017-2018 institutional commercial released today. Narrated by UH alumnus and five-time National Sportscaster of the Year, Jim Nantz, it reflects the next phase of the university’s bold and uplifting “Powerhouse” campaign.

Emphasizing the “power to” and “power of,” the commercial exemplifies what makes UH an undeniable “Powerhouse.” “What is Power?” showcases students from the Bonner Leaders Program planting an orchard in a nearby food dessert, professor Kerri Crawford’s class restoring sand dunes vital to the Texas coast, and Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal’s team from the Brain-Machine Interface laboratory helping restore motor function to a child. It also includes throwback video to Phi Slamma Jamma and astronaut Bernard Harris.

The 30-second commercial was produced internally by the UH Division of Marketing, Communication and Media Relations.

“We wanted this commercial to be a mix of nostalgia and present-day examples of the power of UH and its people,” said Lisa Holdeman, associate vice chancellor/associate vice president for marketing, communication and media relations. “The commercial considers many of the things power can be and includes imagery of core UH messaging including research, energy, the arts, health, athletics and students.”

The commercial will debut nationally on Saturday, Sept. 9, during the Houston Cougar football opener against Arizona at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU. The spot will air during each televised UH football game, as well as during regional and national telecasts featuring UH athletics teams throughout the 2017-18 academic year.
