Social workers from around the greater Houston area will converge on the University of Houston for the Ninth Annual Greater Houston Area Social Work Awards.
The event is planned for 8:30 a.m. to noon, Friday, March 6 at the Hilton-University of Houston Hotel.
Hosted by the UH Graduate College of Social Work, the annual event celebrates all social workers and the help they provide the most vulnerable in our communities.
"Social work encompasses areas many may find non-traditional," said Ann McFarland, director of the college's Office of Community Projects. "Public policy and advocacy are two areas that directly impact our charge. Oftentimes, it is a social worker who is advocating and shaping those policies."
The keynote address will be given by former Texas Rep. Rick Noriega. Now the vice president of community-based initiatives for Neighborhood Centers Inc (NCI), Noriega will discuss "2009 and Beyond: The Human Side of the Stimulus Plan." His remarks also will address the current environment for social justice and advocacy efforts.
Continuing education units are available with the registration cost. For more information, call 713-743-8145.
