Honors College Commons
The Office of Undergraduate Research and The Honors College are pleased you are presenting at the inaugural Houston Scholars Showcase event. The purpose of the event is to showcase the Houston Scholars’ projects to the Provost and the greater UH community. It is also intended to raise awareness for the Houston Scholars and HERE programs.
The event will take place in the Honors College Commons from 2-3:30p.m. on Friday, September 2. Presenters should arrive by 1p.m. to check-in and setup.
Students may present a poster and/or a digital presentation at the event. Complete this online form to confirm what type of presentation you are delivering at the event.
Deadline for Presentations. All presenters should email their posters and/or presentations to Karen Weber at kweber@uh.edu by Friday, August 26, 2016. The Office of Undergraduate Research will print your poster for you.
Poster Presentations. Students who are presenting posters should have prepared a poster measuring 40” (in width) by 36” (in height) landscape mode in PowerPoint. Poster information is typically organized in columns, beginning with an abstract in the first column. Use figures, tables, and pictures to share the data with bulleted text for the highlights. Text should be in 24 pt. font or larger with the title and names of authors and sponsors in fonts larger than the text. If you would like to work from a template, here are formats for you to work from in developing your poster.
Faculty Mentor Recommendation. Faculty mentors must approve the students’ presentations prior to the event.
Visual Aids. Visual aids, models, representations, slide shows, movies, etc. are encouraged.
Event Information. Presenters will check-in at the Honors Commons at 1p.m., and then setup for the event. You will stand by your poster or laptop from approx. 2-2:30p.m. Plan your 3-5 minute remarks in advance for the people who will be viewing your presentation. Then 3 formal presentations will be made from 2:30-3p.m. You will return to your poster or laptop after the formal presentations from 3-3:30p.m.
Researchers—include information about the significance of your research, the problem(s) you were trying to address, how you addressed the problem(s), and what your findings were.
Learning Abroad and Away Students—plan to discuss the highlights of your experience, the learning outcomes, and how it has advanced your academic and professional career. And most importantly, this is the time to talk about how you spent your time working on an independent, creative project, so HAVE FUN!!
Dress. The attire is business casual. Jeans and shorts are not appropriate.
Guests. Please be sure to invite your faculty mentor, friends, and family members to the event. The event will take place from 2-3:30p.m. in the Honors College Commons. Light refreshments will be served.
