Hobby Founding Dean Kirk Watson Named to Governor's Economic Task Force April 17, 2020 April 17, 2020
Today, Gov. Greg Abbott announced state Sen. Kirk Watson, who will become founding dean of the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs on May 1, 2020, will join a statewide task force assembled to provide guidance on re-opening the state’s economy.
Statement of Sen. Kirk Watson on his appointment:
I’m very pleased that Governor Abbott appointed me to this important position and
am ready to do all I can to assist my fellow Texans.
Every aspect of American life has felt the coronavirus’s disruptive shockwaves. As
COVID-19 transforms our way of life, it is imperative for us to protect Texans’ health
and to do what we can to protect their livelihoods. Texans are getting sick and dying
from this virus; Texans are also seriously hurting economically. They worry about
paying their bills, they’re turning to food banks and they’re concerned about their
futures.
As our state moves to help its people, increase economic activity and allow Texans
to get back to more normal lives, we must be sure the efforts are based soundly in
science. This is to protect against a surge or broader spread of COVID-19, which could
result in even greater economic damage.
I look forward to working in this important role and, again, thank Governor Abbott
for the appointment.
