Texas Legislative Study Group Legislative Analyst Fellowship

The Texas Legislative Study Group (LSG) is a nonpartisan caucus within the Texas House of Representatives, established in 1993 to equip state legislators with facts, evidence and detailed analyses of bills. 

The LSG is recruiting graduate and recent post-baccalaureate students from all disciplines at the University of Houston to serve as full-time legislative analysts in Austin for the 90th Texas Legislature Session. Selected fellows track legislation, monitor committee activity and produce written reports, providing evidence-based research to support informed policymaking.

Applications for the 2027 legislative session are now open. This fellowship is ideal for graduate students and recent post-baccalaureate students seeking to strengthen their research, writing and analytical skills while gaining experience in the legislative process at the Texas Capitol.

Program Details

• Duration: January 11–May 31, 2027
• Location: Austin, Texas
• Schedule: Full-time (40 hours a week, with additional hours during peak periods)
• Monthly Stipend: $2,500–$3,000

Academic Credit

Hobby School of Public Affairs students may be eligible to earn up to six hours of graduate credit in public policy or public administration. For questions about academic credit, contact Maggie Padilla, program director of academic affairs, at mmpadilla@uh.edu. 

Graduate students enrolled in other colleges or departments may earn graduate credit in public policy or public administration at the Hobby School as elective coursework or seek credit through independent study courses in their respective departments. All potential applicants are required to consult their academic advisors regarding eligibility requirements and their specific degree plans.

Qualifications

• Be enrolled in a graduate degree program or a post-baccalaureate student within two years of completing an undergraduate degree
• Demonstrate strong writing and analytical skills through writing samples
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Have an interest in public policy and the legislative process
• Must be able to live in Austin for the duration of the fellowship at a residence identified by the applicant
